Interview with LisaHammer

What is your professional background?

I graduated from college in 2003 with a BFA in Graphic Design. After college, I went to work managing my family’s custom aircraft upholstery shop.

What led you to your passion for glass?

I became fascinated with fused glass after buying my first pendant at an art fair. I researched glass fusing on and off for a while before getting the courage to buy my own kiln and give it a shot. Before my big kiln purchase I dabbled quite a bit in mosaics using up my Mother’s scrap glass (she’s a stained glass artist).

What's a typical glass day for you?

I generally work in my studio in the evenings and on the weekends. I typically get home from work about 5:30 pm and will tinker in my studio a bit before cooking dinner. After dinner, I will work in my studio till my eyelids get heavy and I make myself go to bed. If I’m planning to work the entire day in my studio on the weekend, you will most likely find me wearing pajama pants and a t-shirt (my favorite days!).

How do you feed your creativity?

With everything around me and sometimes a little wine ;)

One word to describe glass.

AMAZING

Three words to describe your studio.

6. Three words to describe your studio. Temporary (I am choosing one word to describe it and adding a bit of an explanation. I’ll be moving to Arizona in November so my studio is makeshift now till I get to Arizona where an empty room that will be my studio is waiting for me!)

What keeps you company when you're working on a glass project?

Oliver (My Airedale Terrier) who loves lounge under my workbench and my XM radio tuned in to the 60s channel.

Favorite treat after a productive session or completed project?

It depends on what I’m addicted to for a snack at that moment. Right now I’m lovin’ the 100 calorie Klondike bars.

Favorite gift ever received?

An amber ring that my Dad gave me after a trip to Germany.

Favorite task related to your craft?

Unloading my kiln and washing off the items after a firing. I love to see what was created.

Least favorite task related to your craft?

Applying kiln wash to my frit molds.

Words of wisdom for aspiring glass artists?

Read all you can on the subject and experiment, experiment, experiment! I have shelves full of books and read about glass quite a bit in online forums and still learn new things every day. Also, try to join a group of people that create the same types of items or have similar interests as you. I love being in CGGE for the group support and to be able to talk glass with other members!
